Get Organized for a New Year of Sewing!

After that last stitch is made on that final holiday gift, it’s time for some rest and relaxation and thinking ahead to the new year. All sewists and quilters have a common love for plotting their next project, but before starting a new project, it’s always a good practice to declutter. Decluttering is crucial for optimizing creativity and workflow efficiency. A tidy workspace not only minimizes distractions and prevents the misplacement of materials (where IS that seam ripper?!) but also allows for more creative thinking and sets the stage for positivity and focus.

Here are some essential items to help you keep your sewing space organized:

Storage Containers
Bins and boxes are handy helpers in corralling small sewing notions such as seam rippers, snips, and point turns. Make your own or purchase ready-made ones. Our favorites are open nesting bins that you can stack together when not in use or storage that is clear so you can easily see what’s inside.

Thread Organizer
A thread organizer is essential for keeping your threads neat and easily accessible. Whether it's a thread rack, drawer organizer, or a specialized thread storage box, having a designated space for your threads helps prevent tangling and makes it convenient to find the right color.

Bobbin Storage

Whether you’re hand sewing or machine sewing, keep your bobbins organized with a bobbin box or organizer. This prevents them from unraveling and tangling. You can also have several organizers if you have more than one machine!

Keeping works in progress (WIPs) organized is also crucial for maintaining a productive and stress-free sewing space. Here are some tips to help you manage your projects.

Designate a WIP Area

Set aside a specific area in your sewing space for works in progress. This could be a table, shelf, or storage bin. Having a designated space helps prevent projects from spreading out and taking over your entire workspace.

Use Project Bins, Bags, or Boxes

Assign a separate bin or bag for each ongoing project. Place all the materials, fabrics, patterns, and partially completed pieces in the respective container. This makes it easy to grab the project you want to work on and keeps everything together.

Label Your WIPs

Use labels to clearly mark each project bin or bag with the project name, a brief description, and any other relevant details. This is especially helpful if you have multiple WIPs, as it allows you to quickly identify and prioritize projects.

Document Progress

Keep a project notebook or folder either manually or digitally where you can jot down notes about each work in progress. Include details such as where you left off, any modifications you made, and a to-do list for the next session. This documentation helps you quickly pick up where you left off when you’re ready to start the project again.

Implement a Rotation System

If you have multiple WIPs, consider implementing a rotation system. Allocate specific days or time slots to work on each project. This prevents projects from being neglected and ensures that you make progress on all of them.

Prioritize and Declutter

Periodically review your works in progress and prioritize them based on deadlines or personal preferences. If a project is no longer of interest, consider putting it on hold or reevaluating whether it's worth completing. Decluttering helps you focus on the projects that matter most to you.

The key to maintaining an organized sewing space is regular maintenance. Take a few minutes at the end of each sewing session to put things back. This habit will help you start each sewing session with a clean and organized workspace and allow for creativity to flow!
