3 Sessions: Adult Watercolor



 Watercolor Basics

This flexible art class is part of a series. This series offers four one-month classes that can be taken individually or as a complete four-month experience. Each class stands on its own, with no prerequisites or requirement to have taken previous classes.

Students may join for a single month or continue through all four for a more in-depth creative journey. This series is designed to meet you where you are and let you choose the level of commitment that works best for you.

Overview:

This introductory class is designed for beginners to explore the fundamental techniques of watercolor painting. Students will learn to harness the unique properties of watercolor while developing essential skills for various painting styles.

 

Key Topics:

1. Washes: Learn the technique of creating smooth, even washes. Students will practice flat washes, graded washes, and wet-on-wet washes to establish a strong foundation in watercolor.

2. Techniques: Explore various techniques including dry brush, wet brush, and lifting color. Students will experiment with these methods to create texture and interest in their paintings.

3. Brush Control: Develop essential brush control skills through exercises focusing on the manipulation of water and pigment. Students will practice creating fine lines, broad strokes, and various effects.

4. Layering: Understand the importance of layering in watercolor to build depth and complexity. Students will learn how to effectively layer colors for enhanced richness and vibrancy.

Watercolor Landscapes

 

Overview:

This class is designed for beginners to delve into creating stunning landscapes using watercolor. Students will learn to combine various techniques to capture the beauty of nature.

 

Key Topics:

1. Composition and Washes: Learn how to compose a pleasing landscape and effectively use washes to set the tone and feel of the scene. Students will practice planning their compositions with thumbnails.

2. Wet on Dry: Explore the technique of wet-on-dry painting to create defined shapes and details in landscapes. Students will learn how to control water and pigment to achieve desired effects.

3. Blending and Skies and Salt: Master blending techniques to create realistic skies, clouds, and atmospheric effects. Additionally, students will experiment with salt to create texture in their backgrounds.

4. Paint a Landscape: Put theory into practice by painting a complete landscape. Students will apply the skills learned throughout the class to create their unique landscape artwork.

1. Basic Flowers: Start with the fundamentals of painting simple flower shapes and forms. Students will learn about petal structures and how to represent them in watercolor.

2. Two Color Flowers: Experiment with creating flowers using a limited color palette. Students will explore color blending to achieve depth and dimension.

3. Layering: Understand the importance of layering in floral painting to build richness and vibrancy. Students will practice glazing techniques to enhance their floral compositions.

4. Still Life: Create a still life arrangement incorporating flowers. Students will apply composition, color, and layering skills to paint a cohesive still life piece.

Key Topics:

1. Basic Additives: Discover how to use additives like salt, plastic wrap, rice, and isopropyl alcohol to create interesting textures and effects in watercolor paintings.

2. Watercolor Pencils: Learn how to utilize watercolor pencils for drawing and painting. Students will explore techniques such as drawing out shapes, blocking in colors, and employing dry-on-wet methods.

3. Scoring, Sponges, Blossoming, and Masking Fluid: Experiment with various techniques including scoring for texture, using sponges for soft effects, blossoming for organic patterns, and applying masking fluid to preserve highlights.

4. Layering: Revisit the concept of layering with an emphasis on using different techniques for depth and complexity in watercolor. Students will practice integrating multiple techniques to enhance their paintings.
